The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf, today, 23rd June 2026, received a delegation from the Nigerian Cartographic Association (NCA) led by its National President, Dr. Innocent Bello, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Welcoming the team, Dr. Yusuf described the Nigerian Cartographic Association as a “mini-NPC,” acknowledging the association’s vital role in national development through mapping and geospatial data management.
He emphasized the Commission’s central place among federal agencies, stressing that accurate population data underpins national planning across sectors such as health, education, and infrastructure.
“The NPC is a mini-Nigeria. Among all federal agencies, it is the most importan, not because I head it, but because we produce the data needed for planning,” Dr. Yusuf remarked. “Your association is very dear to us, and I assure you that my doors remain open for collaboration.”
Earlier, the NCA President, Dr. Innocent Bello, commended the NPC for its strategic role in Nigeria’s development architecture, noting that its responsibilities in census, demographic data management, and vital registration are indispensable to policy formulation and resource allocation.
He highlighted the importance of cartography and geospatial technologies in ensuring credible and efficient population and housing censuses, explaining that accurate maps and spatial data are critical for area delineation, boundary demarcation, and demographic analysis.
“Modern census operations depend greatly on digital mapping, GIS, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence,” Dr. Bello noted. “We seek to strengthen collaboration with the NPC to advance geospatial innovation for national development.”

Dr. Bello also extended an invitation to the NPC Chairman to serve as Distinguished Guest of Honour at the association’s forthcoming annual conference, themed “GEO-AI: Transforming Security, Electioneering, and Health Management in Nigeria”, scheduled to hold at Kaduna Polytechnic from September 14 to 18, 2026.
According to him, the conference will bring together leading professionals, academics, and policymakers to explore how population intelligence and geospatial technologies can support effective governance and national development.
The meeting was attended by senior management staff from the NPC’s Geographic Resources Department and the Chairman’s technical aides.
